France/Ile de France: Auvers-sur-Oise
With close proximity to Paris and its accessibility by train and car, travelers to Paris might choose Auvers-sur-Oise for an easy day trip. For people with more time on their hands and who enjoy walking, scenic drives and chateaux, the area warrants a longer visit and has a few interesting places to stay appropriate for both individuals, family or friend reunions, weddings, corporate retreats, or even a mid-size meeting. Rates in the area are generally lower than comparable lodgings in Paris.
Certainly the most unique offering is the Daphne Peniche, a traditional transport barge transformed into a comfortable small inn with six nicely appointed rooms that the owner will tell you are soundproofed, each with a window and private bathroom with shower. Above is a covered deck for dining and lounging. For an additional charge based on the hour or day, the owner can take people on a river tour, even to Paris.
Just across the river from Auvers-sur-Oise in Mery-sur-Oise is the Chateau de Mery Hotel and Conference Center, which is surrounded by gardens and footpaths and is a short walk to Auvers-sur-Oise and the train station. The 70 rooms are in the modern wing and are contemporary, comfortable and correctly appointed for business travelers.
La Lucarne du Voyageur is a well situated and comfortable bed and breakfast, also in walking distance from the train station.
The tourism board lists a number of what the French call “gites ruraux” or opportunities to stay in rural homes. These are often great options for budget travelers but sometimes require a car or taxi to access.
