As for cuisine, there’s everything from the decidedly downscale but delicious $1.30 hamburgers at the Texas Tavern (go all in and order the “Cheesy Western” with cheese, relish, pickles, onion and a fried egg on your burger) to the venerable Regency Room at the Hotel Roanoke, where peanut soup and spoonbread are the specialties of the house. And don’t forget the Home Place Restaurant in nearby Catawba for some authentic southern fried chicken.
If you’re in search of history, heritage, real southern hospitality and home-style cuisine, Roanoke and the nearby towns of Fincastle and Salem are worth adding to your Short Escapes itinerary. More information can be found here.
