Newtown's newest restaurant, this British-Italian restaurant by local scones impresario David Cooper has brought another needed touch of fine dining to town. Cooper, an Englishman who has lived in Newtown for decades, built a scones company in Danbury that taught the East Coast what a scone should taste like. His classy restaurant serves such fare as chicken tikka masala, slow-cooked lamb shoulder and chicken, leek, pancetta and thyme pie. Besides dinner Wednesday-Sunday, Dere Street serves breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and a traditional Sunday roast. There is also a bakery in a separate building behind the restaurant.
