Gold Hill is only 11 miles from Boulder, but the drive takes 35 minutes and can be quite challenging for the uninitiated. Two steep canyons—Sunshine and Fourmile—lead from Boulder to Gold Hill, and the roads have many switchbacks. Drive slowly and keep your eyes on the road, because some stretches lack guardrails, and it's easy to get distracted by the incredible mountain vistas. Using Sunshine Canyon saves a few minutes. To access it, proceed to Boulder's Mapleton Avenue and proceed on the avenue toward the mountains. The road becomes Sunshine Canyon Drive, which you follow for about six miles until it becomes a bumpy, dirt road. Proceed on the dirt road about four miles to Gold Hill.
Air: Denver International is the nearest airport, about a 75-minute drive to Gold Hill.
Bus: From Denver's Union Station, it's about a 45-minute ride to Boulder. The Climb operates bus service from Boulder to Gold Hill. There are only three departures, one in the morning and two in the evening.
