Torcello
This haunting Byzantine church and the adjacent Santa Fosca church, in the shape of a Greek cross, are worth the journey alone. Almost the entire back wall is emblazoned with a mosaic telling the story of the Last Judgement and more. Other incredibly preserved mosaics embellish the front. The overall effect is to take one back in time in a way not possible in Venice. The adjacent campanile, currently under renovation but accessible to the public, offers 360-degree views that can include both Venice and the Dolomite mountains on clear days. Make sure to check the web site for opening hours before making the trip. more...
