Although those who travel by car have the greatest and most flexible access to the area’s hidden treasures, even train travelers can enjoy some of these short escapes. Wherever there is rail access, it is noted in the Getting Here section.

If you are driving to a short escape, use the directions in the Getting Here section or use the “directions” feature on your Google Maps. A more detailed, commercially available road map will also help.

Almost all itineraries have been selected in regions already popular with travelers. So if you plan on going to a popular tourist attraction as well, you won’t have to travel far out of your way to enjoy a short escape.
