Precautions

Although most of the itineraries do not require special athletic abilities, all travelers should dress appropriately for the weather and wear shoes or sneakers designed for walking. Always carry the clothing you’ll need for a worst-case change in the weather. A daypack generally can handle whatever clothing two people might need, plus drinks and a picnic. These small packs, when empty, fit easily into your suitcase. Please remember to carry out whatever you bring in.

You might want to bring insect repellent and take precautions against deer ticks; Wear light-colored clothing; pull your socks over your pants legs, and shower thoroughly after your walk. No one involved with researching this book was bitten by a tick.

The usual countryside obstacles — such as muddy and rocky trails, fallen trees, and poorly cut footpaths — pose the greatest risks. Since you can accomplish the longest of these itineraries in about a half day, there’s no need to race through your walking tour. Take the time to enjoy the beauty, and watch your step. Be sure to pay attention to any warnings or advisories in the Walk Directions.

Although we have never seen a copperhead or a rattlesnake in the wild, people walking in the countryside should know that these poisonous snakes inhabit parts of some regions. You will have no problem if you take the same precautions you would in just about any forest: Watch where you sit down or place your feet and hands.

Finally, the deer hunting season varies by region but often lasts for several weeks in the late autumn. You should wear bright-colored clothing if you’re walking through forests during hunting season.
